HELP US FIX OUR VAN?
We broke down in Philly yesterday and are kind of stuck here while we find out what’s going on with our van. We’ve updated our webstore with all the merch we have in stock. We’ve also added an option to donate $5 to help in case you don’t want anything or would like to throw in a little extra. Josh promises to kiss every t-shirt / record before we ship them out.

Topshelf Records: Deer Leap interview

Tancred: Three years ago today
I sat in a studio in Eliot, Maine. It was day one of recording an EP for my last project, Kids’ Fiction. Blake, the drummer, sat on the floor with a toy piano. Ryan Stack recorded it. He really wanted us to add bass to the recordings, but we were a two piece punk band and didn’t care about…

Analog sessions.
So I think the last time I posted anything significant on here I was in the middle of doing a live analog session with my friends in Life & Limb. I thought id follow up on that session a bit. The outcome was surprisingly clean and warm yet totally organic. We spent the majority of the time setting up and tweaking everything until we got the tones and levels we wanted. I hit the tape pretty hard to get as much saturation as possible without audible distortion. So basically after hearing the outcome I thought I’d like to do some more sessions like this. It really needs to be the right band to fit the sound but if anyone’s interested, email me at formatrecording@gmail.com

Aaron as tape op
-
So I’m in the middle of tracking some songs with Boston band, Life & Limb right now. A few months ago, I came up with the idea to record a band live and mix it straight to tape. This is what we decided to do for these couple songs.
The whole band is in the liveroom and Im in the control room mixing on the 600 as if it were a live show and bussing the stereo mix straight to the tape. We spent all last night teching and tuning drums and started tracking a few hours ago. Once the live music is down, we’ll track vocals to one of the 2 remaining tracks on the tape machine and ill then mix to the computer. Its a completely different way of recording a band than Im normally used to but there’s something cool about just committing to the way something sounds at a given moment. Pics to follow!
